A Very Nice Review of Through the Ever Night

A Blood Lord came across this review of Through the Ever Night on a blog called On Starships and Dragonwings.

Veronica Rossi’s Through the Ever Night is the second in the Under the Never Sky trilogy and I have to say I think I liked the second book better :D . There will be spoilers for Under the Never Sky, so check out my review of it instead. Under the Never Sky was actually one of the first books I got from the library based on book blogger suggestions, so this trilogy has a special place in my heart ;-) . I had some issues with the first book being too romance focused, but Through the Ever Night has completely fixed that problem! Through the Ever Night has strong friendships, heart-breaking adventure, just enough romance to make me smile, but a story beyond just how Aria and Perry feel about each other, haha. I haven’t read the novella about Roar and Liv, and I kind of recommend reading that before Through the Ever Night since I think it would have just upped the feels all the more. But now I get to go read it and get more of these awesome characters :D .

Strengths:

  •  Based on most of the YA books I’ve read, I’ve been convinced that boys and girls can’t be friends without falling in love. Through the Ever Night fixed this, yey! I was relieved and excited to see a strong friendship between Aria and Roar that didn’t have love triangle overtones (well, except for that one amusing moment with Perry >.>).
  • The action just keeps heating up in Through the Ever Night. The Aether is getting worse and not even Aria’s former home in the pod is safe. Everyone wants to find safe haven and I was biting my nails waiting to see how far they’d go to find it.
  • I know I said the romance wasn’t the major focus, and it isn’t, but I actually really like books where the main characters’ relationship is established and a comfy background to stressful plot developments. It’s like what real relationships are ya know?
  • If you’ve read Under the Never Sky, you already know this, but the writing of Through the Ever Night was fluid and compelling. The world-building is awesome (hope this doesn’t happen to our planet for reals D:). The characters develop and interact and grow together as real people. Also can I be best friends with all of them? I just need to hug Cinder and Willow :D .

Weaknesses:

  •  I had a bit of vertigo when I started Through the Ever Night. I don’t re-read previous books before jumping into a sequel and I’ve never found it to be a problem. However, I felt like I had missed something when I started Through the Ever Night and actually went to make sure the novella wasn’t 1.5 and required to read 2. It’s not, you’ll get it figured out, just keep reading.
  • Ummm… when is the third book released please? (That’s all I got, I loved Through the Ever Night, sorry!)

Summary:

I like this pattern I’m seeing in second books where the romance becomes a secondary element and we get to really bite into the plot. Everything is being ratcheted up in Through the Ever Night and the friendships and relationships developed in the previous book are necessary for everyone to stay sane from the stress! If you were a little disappointed with the ending of Under the Never Sky, keep going! It’s totally worth it and you will (hopefully) not be disappointed. I wasn’t at least ;-) .

Heart of the Never World

Heart of the Never World

KikoTsukinamura

She dances among the flames that she accompanied. They swirled around her endlessly, guarding her from harm. Her eyes were a light crimson color, and her hair glistened a light silver as the flames beckoned her call in the sky of never-ending gray and blue. Her feet scuffed the ground in echoes as she trudged along the wounding road in the dark forest.

Howls echoed in the distance, and most wouldn’t hear it, but she did. This was only possible because she was an Aud. Also, a Scire. Whoever didn’t know what these traits were, they were considered Dwellers-or those that lived their lives among false creations. Creations made by mechanical beasts. She had to tend for herself. Even since she could walk, she fought. At the age of 3, she could shoot a bow and arrow better than the best archer in her tribe.

An Aud was someone who could hear the thoughts of others as if they were speaking, and a Scire was someone who could smell feelings. Deception would be a bitter, black stain in her nose, while happiness would be a fragrance that smelled like lilies. There had never been a combination of two such rare traits, and since she had both, people cowered in fear of her.

As she walked the lands that the Aether storms scorched, another howl broke across the wind, sounding an alarm of intruders. Of course, these wolves were her family and she commanded them to the T. So, this little outburst of tyranny surprised. Up ahead, she heard the quick shuffling of feet. There was a couple, a scared one at that.

As the girl walked on, every breath she took, she smelled the comforting scent of fear and a faint scent of violets among it. It was a scent that reminded her of her tribe. She was once part of the Dweller community, but once she came into this Death Shop place, her once-tribe found her, cowering in front of them under a large, hollowed rock.

She would never be scared of the Aether. The Aether would become scared of her in time, and soon, she would control it. The silver-haired girl heard the footsteps continue farther away, and she heaved a sigh.

“It looks like I’m going to have to take care of this myself.” Her silky sweet voice sung out in annoyance. A wolf approached her, then turned with a nod. She nodded back and climbed atop the large, broad back of the leader of the pack. “Let’s go, Feron.”

The wolf she had labeled as Feron nodded swiftly and took off with a loud howl that resonated inside the Aud’s ears. The girl let the corners of her mouth twitch up in satisfaction as she blew her whistle, and the others began piling in front of them in a triangle shape.

On foot, it would’ve taken hours to reach the pair dashing in front of them, but on the back of the wolves, it took only 30 minutes, judging by the way the Aether was traveling through the gray patches of clouds, threatening to touch down at any moment. She whispered to the wolf she rode on to stop, and she hopped off, climbing into the trees to follow on foot. No need to draw attention.

The two stopped abruptly, and the male started looking around. The girl smirked, letting a small chuckle escape her lips. Apparently the male caught it, for he turned towards the tree she stood on. “Where are you? I know you’re there!”

She smelled truth in abundance on the male, while she smelled fear and strength come off the female in a scent of violets. Quite the odd combination-wait a moment. Is it him? “Perry?”

The silver-haired girl jumped down, holding her knife in her little hand that looked delicate but had been broken many times. The surprise was evident on his scent as the male turned towards her. “How do you know me?”

“It’s me, Peregrine!” The girl smiled wide, but realized it didn’t get through, and scowled. “Whatever. I knew you wouldn’t remember me.” She whistled and she heard the growls surround the clearing they stood in. “Mind telling me why you’re in my land, Perry?” The way she rolled the r in his name made his name have a sickeningly cruel taste to it, Perrrry.

“Who…Who are you?” The male that the girl classified as Peregrine slowly spoke, looking at the piercing red eyes in the forest murkiness around them.

“Your biggest nightmare.” She whistled again and spun on her heels, heading back to the Feron to talk about the Outsiders…Funny, that’s what she was called when she first started out here. But now, she was calling people outside of her land Outsiders. Irony loves her.

Through The Ever Night: Book Review (Spoilers Included)

I’ve just finished Through The Ever Night and I have a lot of feels until now. I am gonna tell you my opinion about this book but if you haven’t read it yet…DO NOT READ unless you want to be spoiled.

This book fascinated me, actually. It’s first book, Under the Never Sky, is good but it’s not as exciting as this one. Through the Ever Night is, in my opinion, much more sophisticated and full of complications than the first book.

I love how it portrayed Aria’s change from the pathetic Dweller into a butt-kicking Outsider. I liked the fact that Veronica showed that change can be achieved through determination. I understand how people want to become brave nowadays and I love how Veronica encouraged people through Aria’s character that we can become stronger in so many ways if we are determined enough.

I also like how Perry struggled to become the Blood Lord that the Tiders expect of him. It shows that we really try very hard to please the people around us but in the end, he managed the Tides without having to change who he is, how he thinks and how he decides for the Tides. This clearly means that we need to keep in mind that we don’t have to change who we really are just for people to accept us because they will fully understand us, whatever happens.

When Aria came to the Tides, the Tiders didn’t actually like her- a common reaction from people when we see outsiders/strangers. This actually made me realize how much we can be opinionated in how we accept people. It’s pretty normal, but it shouldn’t be. We should learn to accept people, whoever they are, whatever past they might have, or how different they are from us.

I also love Roar and Liv so much. I like the fact that Liv had to spend a year to forget Roar but in the end, they weren’t able to control their feelings for one another. “Love is rebellious bird that no one can tame” as it says in the book.

Then, there is Soren. I kind of hated him in the first book but the way he helped and guided Aria was something I didn’t quite expect. What a change of attitude! There’s also how Talon softened with Soren. It’s weird but fine too. This just shows children are soft-hearted- a trait adults must incorporate to themselves.

I hate Brooke for being such a rude person to newcomers; Kirra and Sable and Hess, for being ruthless and for taking Cinder to use him to control the Aether. Oh, well. I guess we just have to wait for Into the Still Blue to understand.

In total, I could say that this book is really a good sequel to Under The Never Sky because it allows readers to understand how it is to live in the Tides and how people struggle so much to survive the Aether storms.

Happy Anniversary to Us!

Anniv Header

It’s our first anniversary! On behalf of the fandom, I would like to thank everyone for supporting Under the Never Sky Philippines. To my co-admins, to the PH Fandoms and their admins, all the Tiders, both Filipino and International, and of course, our beloved author slash mother: Veronica Rossi.

From our first follower, to the next, and the next, to more likes on Facebook and reblogs on Tumblr, seeing the fans of Under the Never Sky makes me really happy.

It’s been a year since I created the fandom, and I’m grateful for everything that we have achieved. I can totally say that all the efforts were worth it. I hope to have a better year ahead of us. And oh! Perry and Roar wants to send some kisses in the form of a giveaway! Filipino Tiders, join the Through the Ever Night giveaway here.

We are still looking for members, and we hope you can join our team. Today is a perry-fect day to be cinder-rific by being liv-aliant and showing your roar-ing aria-wesomeness!

We are the Filipino Tiders, and we are going to spread the Under the Never Sky love.♥

Roar and Liv

My confession: I just read Roar and Liv last May 10 and I regret that I only read it on that day because it was so perfect and sad in way that really touched my heart.

I like how the friendship among Perry, Roar, and Liv formed. But what I like most is the relationship of Roar and Liv.

I can totally feel how much the two loved each other. I almost cried while reading this novella. It’s so heart-breaking that Liv has to sacrifice for the Tides. I admire her courage and her willingness to save her people even if it will cost her everything.

With a romantic Roar and a valiant Liv, Roar and Liv is a novella that no one should miss!

Veronica Rossi: A Mother in Every Way

Dear V,

All those times, you’ve been there for our fandom. You’re our first follower on Twitter and Tumblr. You favorite/retweet us and reply to us on Twitter; you like/reblog our posts on Tumblr and you also answer our queries (and told us your birthday) and all I can say is that I’m grateful for that. Those things that you did for us are more than enough.

You were like a mother, you know, being very supportive of what we do. You gave birth to the books that started this fandom, so we can really say that you are our mother. And we love you V, we really do.

V, that shoutout on Twitter? That made me think, is this real? Am I dreaming or is this really happening? Before UTNS PH, I’m just an ordinary girl, but because of you, I felt special, and I now I know that I am not alone. Being the admin of UTNS PH, I met the admins of the other PH Fandoms too. We’re a family now, and if it weren’t for you, UTNS PH wouldn’t be a part of that family.

Thank you. For everything. You proved to us that we can reach the unreachable. You made our fandom feel loved by their mother. And as the admin of UTNS PH, I want you to know that nothing compares to what you have done. You changed my life forever. No. YOU CHANGED OUR LIVES FOREVER.

Once again, WE LOVE YOU V!  Happy Mother’s Day!
